When Change Is Worth the Risk: My Story of Stepping Out on Faith
The Decision to Step Away
"So what are you going to do now? You're still young. You can always go back to work part-time."
These were just a few of the well-intentioned questions I received after announcing my decision to retire early. While many supported my choice to leave a career as a classroom educator, they were puzzled by my decision not to jump into another employer-employee relationship.
My response was consistent:
"I own my own businesses and will be building and growing them."
I didn’t take offense to their concern because I knew it came from a place of love. These were the same people who supported me through undergraduate and graduate school, prayed for me during code red alarms in my classroom, and backed my work as a teacher for 25 years.
A New Perspective Brought by the Pandemic
"COVID-19 hit me like a brick, bringing an unexpected, unchangeable reality."
The pandemic changed everything for me. It reminded me of how fragile life is. Suddenly, people who were important in my life were gone, and I regretted not spending enough time with them.
When the world shut down, I began teaching from home. While it was challenging initially, it became a blessing. During this time, my grandmother fell ill with pancreatic cancer. Working from home allowed me to support her and my family during hospice care.
One of our final conversations solidified my decision to retire early.
We agreed:
"As soon as you can, you should."
The Cost of Staying in a Broken System
"Demand consumes the supply, eventually depleting it."
This is exactly how I felt—depleted. Each year, more demands were placed on teachers in an already broken system. The stress began affecting my health, and I realized:
"No job or career should rob anyone of their physical or mental health."
I knew there had to be a healthier way to use my skills and talents while serving others.
Building a New Path
"I decided to venture into businesses that aligned with my core values and practical needs."
I started with two ventures:
Independent Beauty Consultant with Mary Kay Cosmetics
Travel Industry Representative for PlanNet Marketing and Inteletravel
These businesses offered flexibility, creativity, and multiple income streams. Best of all, I could work remotely, allowing me to spend more time with loved ones while still achieving financial security.
Freedom Through Entrepreneurship
"My stepping out on faith has brought me freedom—personal, time-wise, and financial."
While I’m not a millionaire, I feel rich in other ways. I have control over my schedule, my work environment, and how I spend my time. This journey required managing upfront costs and balancing responsibilities, but it was worth it.
Advice for Others Considering Change
"Plan not to rely solely upon your job for financial security."
I’m not suggesting that everyone should quit their job, but I encourage planning for alternative income streams. Taking leaps of faith has brought me personal growth, financial management skills, and the ability to bless others.
